5 Illustrations For Make: Magazine Volume 65

The first of 5 Illustrations for Make Volume 65 showing a consumer Water Jet cutter. Pretty cool, the water is pressurized and then it's mixed with sand and blasted at whatever material you want to cut, etch, etc. Makey the Robot is being etched into a piece of plate metal.
The 2nd illustration showing a CNC router cutting Makey the robot out of the work piece. The servo cord chain was a pain in the butt to draw for this one, and the frame supports were also a bit tricky. But looks pretty good, yep pretty good.
Here's a pretty generic 3D printer showing a 3D printed Makey the Robot on the print bed. Here are the callouts for the the exploded view of the print nozzle assembly.

J: PLA Filament
K: Stepper Motor to advance PLA spool
L: Filament Cooling Fan

M: Z Step Sensor
N: Extruder Nozzle.
This illo shows a laser cutter cutting a Makey the Robot out of a sheet of metal. This might be my favorite one of the set, I really like how the path of the Laser beam is shown in the main illos and in the detail exploded views.
And last but not least for the Home Maker's workshop is the little powerhouse, the Vinyl cutter. This one is near and dear to my heart because I just recently got a free Cameo Silhouette 2, and after spending nearly 20 years cutting papercraft, spray paint stencils, etc out by hand it's a game changer having a machine that cuts those things out with extreme precision. The world of paper engineering is now fully open, I'll be posting some of my projects here soon, so stay tuned.
Some working detail views from the CNC Router illo. The first one is a detail view of the support struts made from extruded metal, this setup really was built inside of Freehand, you can look at the finished illustration and probably build it just from looking at it.

The second one is a detail view of the controller, I love the big cartoony stop button that gets added to those.

The last one on the left is a screenshot of the orthographic views that I built to make the axonometric illustration. Talk about complicated, sheesh.
Here are some more views of the illustrations in progress. The first one is a comp sketch of the water jet illustration, this was the 2nd rough, the first one wasn't generic enough.

The second picture is an early state of the Laser Cutter illo, it show the laser tube pretty well and what a pain it was to lay out that internal gantry, sheesh.

The final pic is a state of the 3D printer illustration taken while I was still building the components. Even though you can't really see it in the final illustration, the servo that moves the print bed along the Y-Axis is there and connected up like it should be.
